What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse can take many different forms and can affect anyone. Below are some examples of domestic abuse:
- Physical abuse – this can include: slapping, hitting, punching, burning, choking.
- Emotional abuse / coercive control – this can include: isolation from family or friends, stalking, telling you what to wear, putting you down, accusing you of cheating.
- Sexual abuse – this can include: pressure to have sex, pressure to have unsafe sex, unwanted sexual activity, making you watch pornography.
- Financial abuse – this can include: controlling your money, taking your money, telling you what you can and cannot buy, not letting you work.
- Online/Digital abuse – this can include: monitoring your social media and email accounts, harassment, sharing intimate photos or videos without consent.

You may notice that a friend or family member is being abused, it’s important to let them know that you have noticed something is wrong. It’s often difficult to talk about domestic abuse and they may not be ready to talk, but showing that you are there to listen and help may give them the confidence to seek help and support.
